After a week or so, we can taper it down to one hosing a day for the occasional mistake. By now we have also moved the dung spot to the farthest side of the pen, and 80% of the puppy dung is over there. We never clean it up completely, since we want them to be drawn to that corner by the smell. We do hang a fly trap right over the area, though.

When the pups go to their new homes, we send them with a ziplock of their dung for the owner to put in the designated area. Their new families report that housebreaking is merely a matter of showing them how and where. Some hang a jingle bell from the door, which a goldendoodle learns quickly to swat when he needs to go out.
